Crystal Fighters

Star Of Love came out last week. Its an enthralling album that encompasses retro Basque pop, electro, dubstep, a definite taste of wizardry, and a host of weird and wonderful synth sounds, drum beats and an energy that tells of frenetic live shows and a collective journey through the extremes of light and shade.

Talking At Me caught up with them at In The City in Manchester last week and it was easily in the top 3 shows we saw. Management roster (Giant Men) cohorts Mount Kimbie were of course in the same list.

Anyway, go to Crystal Fighters' website and stream the album, and if you like it BUY IT! Its excellent, and see a show soon cos it will blow you away.

Did you see?

Psychologist @ YoYo Thurs 5th August 2010

Iain Woods aka Psychologist has been causing A&Rs to twitch recently, and with good reason. His soulful and often powerful vocal has a classic tone but he uses it in an original, creative and often arresting way. Iain's vocal rides over solid beats referencing trip hop and drum n bass, and between the DJ and band behind him, quirky synth and bass lines create brooding, subtle textures to all out DnB frenzy.

All this set to a performance that goes from studied calm to a kind of mania familiar to ravers, in turns. Iain has real charisma, and throughout the ups and downs of the show its hard not to watch him. On the musical front I wanted to hear less scratching vinyl, sometimes the general sound is too in the 90s Soulwax/Ninjatune pocket, with spoken word samples to boot, but this doesnt detract from the fact that Iain is a huge talent.

You can hear some weird and wonderful teasers on his Myspace

T.A.M No.3!

We went back to the Arts Club after our initial smash in June, and brought with us a fine crew from our last party at Pirates Bar.. Rita and Kobe went back to back til after midnight testing the crowd and winning them over with bass heavy sets and keeping the dancefloor solid.

For the last spot Alex Phountzi (Greenmoney) took on the decks and brought the place down. I dont remember much after that.

Big up to Nicola who did the visuals for the night and made the place into a Talking At Me galaxy.... Somthing like this...

Greenmoney EP

We were well chuffed to have Alex Phountzi one half of Greenmoney at the Pirate's Bar and are well excited to have him booked in for July 30th at Nottinghill Arts Club.. If u dont know the score........

GreenMoney

On their Myspace page, GreenMoney labelled themselves as 'a pair of jokers from West London  making beats in an NW10 rave shed.' Well, we're all laughing now as Alex Phountzi, formerly  of Bugz In The Attic, and Leo Greenslade, of legendary Notting Hill Arts Club night yOyO,  have been working together since 2008, combining their talents to remix artists such as Chart  Topper, Yo Majesty, Jamaica's Terry Lynn and Busy Signal, Detroit's Amp Fiddler and Kanye  West album vocalist Kid Cudi.

Greenmoney join the dots between bashment house, hip hop, UK funky, grime and dubstep. Their  track, 'Skydiving', with London rapper Twizzle is getting heavy rotation as well as recent remixes  for Crookers, Gramophonedzie, Cubic Zirconia and Busy Signal... 'Gold Ru$h' (Fools Gold) is their first solo release, featuring the cream of UK bashment MCs.

My new favourite DJ

RITA MAIA took the Pirate's Bar upstairs to a new level at Talking At Me Part 2..

Founding member of 'Badmood Collective" Rita pioneered bass culture in Lisbon and her set that I heard weaved between the sounds of Mount Kimbie and the like to dubstep with a Brazilian flavour.

We are gonna book her again for our show on the 30th July at the Nottinghill Arts Club

You can see all about Badmood here

Talking At Me x Pirates

YO

To introduce our party East we took to the Pop-up Pirate's Bar on Clerkenwell Road, previously home to the Dust Bar. "The bar is the brainchild of the Mothership Group (responsible for The Book Club and the Queen of Hoxton) and artist management platform Central Illustration Agency. Working with CIA's “Pirate” collective of artists/art directors “using a mixture of spraypaint, set-design, paper, film and photography”, they have created what they reckon to be the “very first Pop-Up-Bar-as-Art-Installation project”.

We brought a party in the shape of:

RITA MAIA
CHEAP DATE
ALEX PHOUNTZI (Greenmoney)
KOBE 1

New band we love- TROUMACA

We had this band on our launch night and were blown away with their set. Future garage beats and dubby bass, psychedellic textures and ethereal synth and guitar sounds behind Sam Baylis' soulful vocals made for a magical but buzzin' show. READY!

T.A.M No.1

On 30th May 2010 Dom and me launched our club night Talking At Me.

It  was a total banger, at the Nottinghill Arts Club on the Sunday before May bank hols.. The club is home to other legendary nights like YoYo and Death Disco as well as really being the only venue in West London for cutting edge music, so we felt this was the right place to start!

If that sounds like we're bigging the place up a touch enthusiastically you'd probably be right as Dom and I have more than a little history there...

Check the below Myspaces and listen to the peeps that kept the beats on point all night long.

Ignug --- NFA --- Scarlet Harlots --- Lixo --- Disclosure

They all smashed it, and you can get some idea of the vibes from this pic below.

See u next time x
